    News Content

    • Pan-democrat legislators succeeded in embarrassing the government by unprecedentedly voting down the funding bill request yesterday. Although it would have minimal impact on the government, it was, according to Allen Lee Peng-fei, a sign of the government’s ineptitude.
    • As many pro-establishment legislators were in Beijing for the National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the funding bill was voted by the pan-democrats, with 17-0 in favor. The government was two votes short of the support it needed to pass the bill. If the bill was passed, it would allow the administration to carry out services between April 1 and mid-April, when the 2011 -2012 budget is appropriated.
    • FS John Tsang criticized the pan-democrats for placing politics above citizens’ sake. Secretary for financial services and treasury Professor Chan Ka-keung said he would table the interim allocation of funding at next Wednesday’s Legco meeting.

    • The veto is a further blow to government which has been facing credibility crisis.
    • It shows the government is insensitive to the crisis the administration has been facing.
