    • Airport – the third runway

    News Content

    • The government proposed to build the third runway for Hong Kong International airport at the estimated cost of HK$136.2 billion.
    • Although it would be the city’s most expensive single project, the Airport Authority said it will bring eight times as much in economic benefits over the next 50 years.
    • The government said if the plan is rejected, the airport’s two runways would run out of capacity by 2020, causing the city losing 23 million air passengers and 2.9 million tones of cargo volume.

    • The government fails to provide the environmental and social cost of it. Only partial information is provided.
    • The project requires reclamation of 650 hectares – half the present site of the airport. That explain why environmentalist strongly oppose the plan, saying it would create massive habitat loss and excessive air pollution.
