    • Government’s bill to scrap the LegCo by-election

    News Content

    • After government has taken a U-turn on its proposal to scrap the legco by-election, Mr. Cheng Yiu-tong, an executive councilor and president of the pro-Beijing Federation of Trade Unions, has urged the government conduct a review of the political accountability system, including whether to allow the chief executive can belong to political parties and increase the number of political appointees – deputy secretaries and undersecretaries.
    • Cheng said the government’s U-turn has sparked public concern over how equipped it was to make a decision and stick with it. He said what citizen fear most are ever-changing policies.
    • At the same time, more than 20 government-friendly legislators will meet Hong Kong-base senior mainland officials tomorrow in Shenzhen to discuss the 12th five-year plan.

    • It is not unusual for the pro-establishment camp to call for a review of the political accountability system after they have faced a political setback.
    • But the call is very similar. To put is simple, it is to broaden its power base so as to strengthen their rule.
    • The political accountability system is not a democratic system. It only helps strengthen the authoritarian rule.
